How do I fix rough idle and ticking

Hello...my name is Gary. I own a 2001 Honda Accord LX 2.3L 4cyl engine with 181,000 miles on it. Because I live on a fixed income and cant really afford a new car or even a newer used car, Ive chosen to keep my car as long as possible and fix whatever needs fixing. This year I had the front Cradle erode and had it replaced along with most of my front end parts. That cost me around $2000. Back in July of this year I couldnt pass emissions test and took it to a garage to be checked. I was told I needed a catalytic converter, a complete tuneup(wires, plugs, etc.) plus some expensive emissions parts. That cost me another $1100. After that my car ran quiet and smooth, passed emissions and has been getting better gas mileage. Well here I am 4 months later and my car is starting to run rough, make a louder noise(almost like loud exhaust but was told there are NO exhaust leaks) and my gas mileage has come down. I took my car back to the same mechanic because the work he did was under warranty. He claimed that he couldnt find anything wrong with any of the parts he replaced and wasnt sure what the problem was. He DID hear a slight "ticking noise" and said it could be my timing belt. My timing belt was replaced 84,000 miles ago. What is your opinion and also Im told its expensive to replace. Is my car one of the cars that if the belt breaks it will destroy the engine? Im not sure exactly what to do? The car still runs but idles alittle rough like the timing is off. Can I still keep driving this car for awhile yet without ruining my engine IF it is the timing belt? Thanks for your time Scotty!!

I would get a second opinion. Your engine is an interference engine and if the nosie is from the timing belt, you are better off taking care of it.
