Power Steering

I have a 2006 Hyundai Elantra with 125,000 miles. When I start first thing in the morning, the steering is very stiff. Once I am out of the driveway it is fine. Do you know why and how do I correct it?

Check your power steering fluid to make sure it's full. If the fluid has never been changed in 17 years, now would be an opportune time to do so. If you still have problems check pump pressure to make sure it's up to specification and if not install a new pump.

Some power steering racks are known to develop "morning sickness" with age, particularly in cold weather, because the internal seals harden up. If that's causing the problem you correct it by installing a new power steering rack.
