I am looking for a reliable vehicle for my daughters first car. What do you think of the Subaru Forester? I am looking at a 2017 with 81K for free from a relative. I know already it needs tires but free is free. Free can also end up being a headache.
I am also looking at Honda's but I am getting nervous about the brand. The local Honda Dealer just closed up in my area.
As you said, free is free. I know several people with Subarus made from 2015 to present and they have had minimal issues. One friend with a 2017 Outback recently had to have a rear wheel bearing replaced and that's been about the worst of it. (My personal ownership experience is with 1970s model Subarus which isn't really applicable to today.)
I'd say unless it's been seriously abused it should be fine. Assuming it's not a standard shift you'll want to change the CVT fluid since that most likely has never been done.

Me too, a few friends of mine have had issues with their cars over the past few years.
So far I like my WRX, for more info see this thread from a few days ago: https://carkiller.com/scottykilmer/qa/question-on-subarus/#post-253290
Agree with @chucktobias, should be fine. Yes, the CVT fluid should probably be changed (not DIY). Front and rear diff fluid, too (easy DIY). Spark plugs might be getting close (look up “Subaru spark plugs” in the search bar above)
