Hi Scotty, I own a 2012 Subaru Forester with a 5 speed manual transmission. I want to drain and replace my power steering fluid using the turkey baster method but I'm not sure about what fluid to put back in. The owner's manual says Dexron 3 ATF but that isn't available in stores anymore and is discontinued. Should I use Dexron 6 or the Dex/Merc ATF by Valvoline. Both say they are compatible with Dex 3
I would use the Dex/Merc since basically it is the Dexron III formulation and that's what's specified for that car. It's not licensed by GM any more but it's still the same stuff. I've been using Dex/Merc for all Type A, Dexron II, and Dexron III applications for years and never had a problem.
I'm surprised a car that recent is using transmission fluid for power steering, that's what we used 50-60 years ago. (Back then it was Type A Suffix A, an ancestor of Dexron.) I'm used to seeing dedicated power steering fluid these days.

Dex 4 and 6 is compatible with, and supercedes Dex 3
