Pre-filling the oil filter

Hi Scotty, I have a question regarding changing the engine oil. I heard that it is better for the engine to pre-fill the oil filter when changing the oil, it creates a faster oil pressure. What is your opinion on that? Thank you

Makes no difference. I normally prefill half way but you don't have to.  In fact, some oil filters are upside down which can't even be prefilled.

It's interesting that some oil filters even have instructions written on them.  Honda oil filter has instructions which does not call for pre-filling....

Thanks for your input

If you can, it might be better to pre-fill it, otherwise your engine runs without oil for a brief moment.

Depends who you ask

Always thought this was a rather silly question until I saw Lake Speed's tests and results.

@hixster he bases all his assumptions on oil analysis though. A link between analysis results and real world effects has not been established , IMO.

Good video. I've never not pre filled the filter as I was taught many many years ago. I used to watch Lake Speed drive in NASCAR in the 80's. Perfect name for a race car driver.

We never prefill the oil filter with oil. It is also messy to do it. We have 06 Camry with 375k miles and it runs fine. Never had any issues.
