Hi! I viewed a number of Scotty’s videos trying to make a sense how to use my set budget to buy a pre-owned luxury car. I greatly appreciate all that I did learn and the valuable tips. I’d like to narrow my list and hear opinions on which car to gravitate toward. I specifically want a SUV and my budget is around $35K. I’d like Volvo, Audi, BMW, and Mercedes. Considering all the functional factors and gas cost-effectiveness what make SUV you would recommend? Do you specifically prefer a model? Also, would you recommend buying from out of town for saving cost? We live in DC area and I hear the markup here are inflated. I appreciate any and all feedback. Thanks in advance.
I’d agree with all the other commenters and add that any $35,000 SUV from any of those manufacturers is gonna have a lot of depreciation left in it.
The correct answer if you want a luxury SUV would be to look at Lexus and Acura. Some of those have excellent long term reliability.
But I get it. German luxury has a certain panache that you just don’t get from a nice, reliable Corolla. So if that’s what you want, I’d take a different strategy: buy one for $20k and keep a slush fund for repairs. Look for an older model with a naturally aspirated engine and a minimum of options. Keep it simple. (For example, my son got a well-maintained second gen Porsche Cayenne for about 20 Grand or a little under. It’s required a little care and feeding, but overall he’s very happy with it.)
Or get a first gen ML 350 for $8000, and replace it 3 times :d
Audi, BMW, and Mercedes
all moneypits beyond 100k. Not what you want if you're saving cost.
Look at Lexus/Acura

How much are you additionally budgeting to keep one of those money pits running?

Shopping on a budget with a used Mercedes, BMW, Volvo and Audi? I think you might be biting off more than you can chew. If you really want one, lease a brand new one so you can get it out of your system. Shopping on a budget is exactly the opposite from people who usually buy those cars. Your stereotypical snobby lawyers, etc. drive them, and they make hundreds of thousands a year. They don't care what breaks.
