Hey scotty i recently bought a clean title 2011 ford f150 5.0 from marketplace for 7000$ absolutely nothing wrong with the car had a mechanic check with 169000 miles and was wondering if it was a smart approach and whether it will last me a long time?
The 6R80 transmission was introduced in that year's F-150, as well as the 5.0. Scotty doesn't usually recommend vehicles with brand new engines or transmissions, because you're basically guinea pigging yourself. In this case, both the engine and transmission were brand-new. The original 6R80 transmission was patented by ZF in the early 2000s and Ford received a license to build it in 2011.
Earlier model Ford-produced transmissions had potential lead frame issues. The lead frame is basically the transmission output shaft sensor and all of the transmission's solenoids all rolled into one module. It's inside the transmission itself, attached to the valve body.
Early model Ford-produced transmissions also had issues with metallic particles in the transmission pan. The filter catches the particulates, luckily. Change your transmission fluid obsessively if you want it to last. They can last if you take care of them, unlike the 10-speed automatics that Ford is producing now.
People tend to abuse those 5.0s, hopefully yours isn't all worn out. My truck is a 2014 3.7L F-150, the same engine and transmission are in my 2017 Mustang that I bought brand-new.
Look up your VIN to see if you have any outstanding recalls. Quite a few early model transmissions had recalls for lead frames. If the transmission loses contact with the output shaft speed sensor, it would go into 1st gear, even on the highway. Ford updated software during the recall to override the 1st gear command and move to 3rd gear and a limp mode if it ever happens.
Ford produced a lot of those F-150s. They had relatively few recalls, other than those early in the generation. You made a decent choice, overall.
