Problem when Filling Fuel

I have a 2003 Santa Fe with about 180,000 miles and a 2.7 engine. When filling up with fuel the pump keeps shutting off. I have checked the evap charcoal canister and it is not blocked. The vent valve is not shut either. What else could cause this problem that I can check?

I mean the gas station pump. It keeps clicking off when I try to fill the car with gas.

Thank you,

Jason

When you say pump, do you mean the fuel bowser or your car’s fuel pump?

Scotty has a video for that, hopefully it helps you - https://youtu.be/B7EcWwlhzBM

Just a thought.  I had that problem after they installed new pumps at my regular gas station.

Switched gas stations, and didn't have a problem.

@carlos
I drove this across Minnesota and Wisconsin and had this problem at every gas station so I don't think it is the pumps.

The reason I guess is the fuel gun’s shape doesn’t fit your car.

I had a Benz witch from Germany, when I was fueling gas I got the same problem, eventually I figured it out, I put fuel gun too deep, just pulled half inch back and problem solved.
Don’t stick the gun all the way into the hole.

@mink
I tried that too. It didn't help. If I fill it very slowly it works.

Thanks for the link. I will try blowing air through the line with the gas cap off. I wish I would have tried that before removing the canister.

When I blow compressed air into the line that goes to the fuel tank it is pressurizing the tank and I can hear it depressurizing very slowly even after removing the nozzle from the line. It that normal?

@kypper98
I am not sure the slow depressurization is normal or not but I think gas tank and it’s line should be sealed and insulated very well otherwise cars park for long time the gas in tank will volatilize.

Thank for the reply. I will put the charcoal canister back in and try filling up. I noticed in a diagram of the fuel system there is a fill vent valve. If I keep having problems I will have to see how to access that. Hopefully I didn't break anything with the compressed air in the tank.

tried

Probably when you fuelling your car, gas the fluid doesn’t go down quickly, the probe / sensor at the gun top detect gas and it thinks that oh man the tank is full now I have to stop otherwise fuel will spray out I have to protect customers I don’t wanna be sued.

I once had a car which did that no matter what. I found that if I just pulled the pump nozzle out an inch or two that it would fill fine. I did that for years and never had a problem. I wasn't worth looking further into it.

This happens on my 2000 Ranger. If I hold the nozzle slightly to the left it works {black}:idontknow:
