1999 Ford escort 2.0 shock, 129000 miles. This is now I believe going to be the 3rd thermostat I have put in this car since I did timing belt and water pump at 115000 miles. I'm going to try to put one more in (hopefully the housing bolts don't break off in the block again!). What would be a good trip and decent brand? Thanks guys!

freezing it makes the thermostat stick open

is your antifreeze concentration strong enough? An antifreeze tester is less than ten bucks.

I mix 50/50 and it's Oregon so when I say before freezing it's only maybe 25 degrees! We very rarely see less than 20 here

that's very strange. So after that happens, and you pull the thermostat out, the valve is stuck in the open position, and it doesn't shut again? Like it's permanently broken? Or you mean this only happens while in the vehicle?

Personally, I only buy the original equipment ones at the dealer. They always work right. They aftermarket Chinese crap is off and garbage. But of course you might have another problem. Realize that. See my video. How to fix an overheating car Scott

The 1999 Ford Escort strikes again! I have now gone through 4 different brand thermostats one of which was a motocraft so I used factory one like u suggested. It seems every time I get a night well below freezing it makes the thermostat stick open and it quits working properly after that. I'm trying to figure out why. My only thought is maybe when it gets cold enough the thermostat housing shrinks from the cold and squeezes the thermostat? And causes it to malfunction?
