Proper transmission filter seal for 2001 buick park avenue
Hey guys. I am going to change the ATF fluid and filter in my buick. Can anyone help me find the proper seal I need to replace? I noticed scotty replaced the seal in one of his videos. I'd like to do that as well. Any help would be righteous.
I have seen guys removing a seal with a seal picker tool
that's exactly the seal the red arrow is pointing to.
the thing the guy is holding in his hand in your video, is this exact thing.
then pushing the filter on.
that's why it's positioned above the filter neck in the photo.
. If that's the only seal
Besides the pan gasket, it's the only seal I'm aware of.
seal picker tool
Be careful not to mar the surface of the valve body. It's made of soft aluminum. I cringed a bit when the guy jammed a pair of pliers in there. Be ginger with a steel pick. I fashioned a tool out of an old toothbrush handle.
Haha. Yeah, I guess he was missing a picker tool. My new filter came with the seal attached. It's on there pretty good. I can't pull it off. Can I just just leave it on there when I install?
I would take it off so I could be sure it was seated fully before putting the filter in. Filter position is critical to so that it picks up fluid properly and doesn't starve the transmission. Try warming it up with a hair dryer.
If that's the only seal, then i'm going to give it a go.
I watched your video carefully, it's the only seal... Guy's pliers crushed old seal in video. @imperator 's photo points to new seal that replaces it..
Thx so much. I just wanted to be sure. My new filter came with the seal attached. It's on there pretty good. Do I even need to take it off?

No, you do not need to take the seal off of the filter. Just be careful as you install it, make sure it seats good. When you put the pan and gasket back on, run the bolts up by hand as he did. 2 other good points are using the 'star pattern' when tightening the pan bolts and don't over-tighten. (nice video overall)
Thank you so much man. These questions were the only thing preventing me from giving it a try. I'm rdy to go!
it usually comes in a kit. filter + seal + pan gasket
around $20
rockauto.com is a good source
Gotcha! Thx for the rockauto recommendation. That must be the spot. Does the seal usually come attached to the filter? if not, it didn't come with one. What is the proper name of the seal so I can look it up on rockauto?
Thank you mountain man!
Sorry for the late response Mountain. But is that the only seal? I have seen guys removing a seal with a seal picker tool and replacing it, then pushing the filter on. If that's the only seal, then i'm going to give it a go.
