I saw something about Mazda using a gasoline engine as an extender for their EV’s. I just don’t  understand why they think this is a good idea, don’t they  know that it

Scotty has covered the pitfalls and problems of electrification many times in his videos. The closer you look the worse it gets. The insane forceful push behind electric vehicles is primarily political, and also has to do with the way that certain powerful individuals and global organizations want most people to live.  However a deep dive into these issues is beyond the scope of this site.

Sounds like a good idea to me.
Every EV should have an alternative/reliable source for vehicle propulsion.😁

I mean doesn’t that defeat the purpose?

bottom line is that it's a mode of transportation. If your vehicle can't reliably get people to where they need to go, then nobody will buy it. Design needs to meet needs, not fantasies. And there isn't enough power to charge a country of EVs. Or even one city.

.... that it what?

seems like a logical way to extend the range

It’s a stop gap idea.

I've been watching the car manufacturers, and the bottom line is that they are phasing out all of the ICE powered vehicles. I'm guessing it will take 15 years or so.

If the EPA passes the new 2027 emissions regulations, it will only accelerate the changeover.

Many of the next generation vehicles coming down the pipeline are replacing all of the naturally aspirated engines with even smaller turbocharged engines in order to meet the emissions requirements. The generation following these last remaining ICE will be EVs.

As for the power required for all of these EVs, western governments do not care about that.  They are quietly pushing for a massive reduction in vehicle ownership to fulfill their plans.

I'm totally against all EVs, however the government and auto corporations are forcing this on all of us.
