Although manual is best for longevity, Volkswagen's 8 speed automatic transmission is actually good. This is NOT the DSG transmission (7 speed) that is well-known for issues. Volkswagen is using the new ZF 8 speed transmission now, and they're well-known for reliability. BMW has been using them ever since and now other car manufacturers are starting to use them as well, including VW.

@razmigb
Is this the same transmission in 2019 ?
My wife has one and it makes a coffee grinder noise. Numerous lawsuits to VW.Reliable ? Really?

@mrfixitman
Actually, I am wrong about the ZF 8 speed being in the VW Jetta. That link I provided in the other post states that it uses an AISIN transmission. I thought VW moved on to using ZF transmissions in their Jettas...they are only using ZF transmissions in the Touareg and Crafter van (their longitudinally mounted engines). ZF is a very reliable transmission that hasn't had any major issues like this coffee grinder noise...that is the AISIN transmission.

Definitely don't get the automatic but either way I wouldn't expect any modern vw to make it to 150k miles without issues.

Hy!

New generation came out in 2018. If it doesn't bother you being a guinea pig for issues during usage, go ahead. Otherwise don't buy it.

Good luck!

Agreed. My wife has a 2019 Jetta with Automatic. Sounds like a coffee ☕ grinder when up shifting. Good luck
