Hey Scotty, the rear brakes on my 94 chevy cheyenne K2500 4x4 long bed. It has the SBC TBI 5.7l with the 4l80e on the back it. Single cab with a FULL 8 foot bed. I recently replaced the drums, shoes and wheel cylyndars as well the springs. also replaced the driverside parking brake cable. Issue that i have is the shoes seem to be hanging up ever so slightly when going down the road then it releases creating a very loud clap. Park brake cable seems to be at least 3/8 too long, don't know for sure cause i am just a shade tree mechanic. I did have the drum checked for being out of round, it is .002 of the inch. I and the machinist that check it do not believe that thats the problem. Any ideas you have to what the hell is going on is very appreciated. i will however install a disc brake convertion kit but it wont be for a while.

Thank you in advance, Sincerely menotyou aka Lance

You should make sure the spots on the contact points between the shoes and backing plate are clean and well lubricated . Also could try just backing off a thread or two on the barrel adjuster to allow slightly more clearance

The parking brake cable I mentioned is no where as ridged as the passenger side, which is still stock. The driver's side cable had been tampered with so I replaced it. Would it cause said issue?

It is definitely possible if it’s dragging

Make sure you have the lead shoe and the following shoe in the correct position.  The, as R4nier said, lubricate the contact points between the shoes and the backing plates.

Also make sure the contact points on the backing plate are not worn down after nearly 28 years. If worn the shoes will not be aligned properly with the drum. (The fix is to install new backing plates if available, or build up the contact areas by welding material on and grinding down to spec.)

Excellent point. Bravo!
