Rear Main Seal Leak

Topic starter

I have a 2015 Ford Explorer AWD, Automatic, Limited Edition; with 210000kms on it and have been experiencing a small oil drip every few days. Proceeded to mechanic and was told rear seal was gone and 9hrs labour with a cost of $3000.

My question is, will Blue Devil or similar products be effective or is that snake oil? I'm okay if I have to pay for the job, but an alternative seal restorer was recommended. Thoughts? Will it work on swelling up the seal and stopping the leak? Like I said it is a very small leak, and confirmed it was coming from the engine.

I think every toyota I have had has a small leak on the rear main seal.

I have successfully ignore it for many hundreds of thousands of miles, although I do wipe it off every now and then.

I like to think of it as extra rust prevention as I live in the rust belt.

They have a very interesting labor charge, 9 hours labor and total cost of $3k? Wonder how much they are charging you for parts?

Scotty's friend Bernie makes/sells a miracle stuff for just this problem, so suggest you try this.

No one can say for sure this will help, but are you sure a seal-change by an not-so-competent-or-having-a-bad-day-mechanic will be a 100% succes (other than being your private money-leak)???

Alternatively, you can let it drip, and keep an eye on/fill up the oil content.

Thanks @freshoiled2, I can't open link for miracle stuff. Could you try to post again. Appreciate it.

@Bill,

It is not a link, it is only a colored word-text to 'point to'.

Scotty has a video on the stuff, will try to find that and post here later this day.

I was not right apparently in thinking it to be a product of that Bernie company.

(Bernie's site: https://www.automotivetestsolutions.com/ ).

But:

I found the video where a -proven by Scotty- sealer is shown:

You should use the version for engine oil.

(I did not use it myself, but who wants to mistrust Scotty's words...)

I've had success with this: ATP AT-205

(ATS-505 products are engine cleaners, not stop leak products.)

Scotty has recommended using AT-205 re-seal for small leaks coming from rear main seals. He hasn't recommended any other products in the "snake oil" category.

@nlord has a point.  A rear main seal is an expensive job, but for most cars it’s in the hundreds not thousands.  Unless there’s something about Explorers I don’t know.
