Does my car really need these repairs?

Rear sway bar needs replacement and drivers side rear rotor is shiny only in the middle on Toyota Camry 2004 xle

The garage told me about the sway bar last year when I had other work done. I declined because the bill was already over $1000 dollars. I just hit 126,000 miles on my car. No trouble codes and it's automatic, 2azfe engine, 2.4L.

I looked at the rear sway bar and its rusted bad. I can't get under there to inspect more. There is a clunking noise in the back while driving. Also the steering wheel shakes when I brake at speeds over 30 mph. The other thing I just noticed is the rear rotor on the drivers side is shiny in the middle of the rotor. Is this from the bad sway bar and or links or is it a break pad, caliper pin ext.

I don't want to get ripped off again and if I can go some of the work myself I will. I have a jack and tools. I seen your video on replacing sway bar links and it looked so easy. I could get the parts from rock auto and save an arm and leg, head and feet these days.

I trust your judgement more than these con-men at the garages. They add even the kitchen sink to the bill.

Thank you for all you do and God bless you.

Respectfully,

Jimmy D.

If the shop is telling about things you actually need then it's not a "rip-off"

sounds like you need new brake rotors all around. And likely brake calipers too.

Is this from the bad sway bar

no in fact I would say it's the opposite. The shaking from warped rotors is rattling your car apart.

It won't be. Based on your description, there will be a lot of fighting and cussing. My advice to save yourself some grief is to get an angle grinder and just cut off and hammer out all the bad parts and replace them.

So I took my car into the shop to replace the sway bar and told them about the shaking also the warn rotor. They looked at it and told me I needed 1 new caliper and 2 rotors on the back plus break pads. They said the front was fine. Also new sway bar linkage. So I had the work done and the car runs okay, no more clunking noises. They also filled the fluids which I did not ask for. I only use Toyota brand fluids and they put in whatever it called for. This was after the fact. Spent $700+ for labor and $500+ for parts. I feel ripped off or was this normal inflation for 2022?
