Rekeying Old Trunk Lock Assembly

Topic starter

My '79 Catalina has been missing its trunk lock tumbler for quite some time, so I was showed how to use a flathead screwdriver to open and close the trunk. I was in the junkyard the other day and pulled the tumbler assembly out of a 1981 Oldsmobile Delta 88, which is another GM B-Body. Can a car locksmith or myself rekey the tumbler from one car key to another? I've never messed with locks before, and have no clue if such a thing can even be done.

I think a locksmith should be able to do this, or at least make a key that will work with that lock cylinder.

It seems to match the key style of my car's luggage key. It'll go in and try to twist, so that's a good start, lol. The ignition key doesn't do the same thing. I assumed it wouldn't. I'll look around and see if any local locksmiths can help. I've never needed lock work done on anything before.

You can mess with it yourself but you'll probably wind up with springs and lock pins all over the place.  Take it to a lock smith.

A friend of mine has rekeyed car locks before but it was such a hassle with the tiny parts he says he'll never do it again. I tend to lose stuff myself so I'll let a pro handle it.
