Research on my Fe390 block

This pertains to sixties mercury's,, I have a 63 monterey with a fe390.  the factory fuel pump has an intake line, a line to the carb (motorcraft 2100) and a vent back to the tank.  I was trouble shooting the fuel system.  It has a X 1648 stamped on the pump, with a number 6 Carter carb I think.  I have been to many shops and have not gotten an answer what I have- and can I get a replacement like the one that came with the car.  Somewhere I read that it was used for the 63 to 64 time era on the fe blocks.  i can find many two line fuel pumps but not with the return vent line to the tank.  I realize this question pertains to much older vehicle.  But I would like to keep the original configuration that came with the car.  Thanks in advance...

First I've heard of that kind of setup on a car that old. I have a "Motor's" manual covering your car but it does not have that kind of detail about the fuel system, only shows standard-type 2-line pumps. Probably the factory shop manual would document what you have.

Have you checked into having the existing pump rebuilt? A lot of older pumps are screwed together and can be rebuilt. Hemmings is a good resource both for replacement parts and rebuilding services.

My guess it might be a throw back to the outboard motor boat needs.  the gas cap does not create a pressure at all.  is the vent is there to prevent vapor locks?  No one really knows.  I have checked at ford dealers, speed shops and mechanics, I get a blank stare when they see it.  Is it a early 390 design that was stopped in 64 engines.  I know it is original to the car, the motor or car has not been altered.  Thanks for for input.

Possibly. I've seen that kind of setup on 1980s cars equipped with carbs and mechanical fuel pumps, like AMC Eagle. However instead of having the extra line on the fuel pump a fuel filter with a second outlet is used to keep fuel circulating back to the tank to prevent vapor lock.

What I have done is order a two line fuel pump and will plug the return line to the tank.  I will look to find a shop that can rebuild the old one in the meantime.

There is a model number stamped in the case (M4008 I think?)  Carter did list it at one time looking at their site for the years 63-64.   Thanks to all for to all for the input.  I just need some warm weather now to run a new fuel line and rebuild the 2100 2 barrel.
