2008 Subaru impreza scanner reads lean bank 1, getting black residue around tailpipes and sometimes running rough. Clear the code runs ok for a short time does it again. Replaced air filter for a start.

there's something weird going on. black residue indicates rich mixture, but the computer is reading lean.
Either there's a major imbalance between the banks, or an O2 sensor isn't working.
Take a MAF reading, look for vacuum leaks, and try injector cleaning
