- I'm interested in buying a cheap yet reliable and safe used Volvo sedan or wagon with a non-turbo engine and decent gas mileage that will be easy to maintain.
- What are the best models and years?
- How many miles should I allow on it at time of purchase for long term use?
- I'm not a high mileage driver but do you know about how many miles they can last with regular maintenance?
- Is there anything specific I should look out for before buying?
- Thanks so much for your time and expertise!
Are you aware that the Chinese bought Volvo? It's owned by Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. Geely has an incredibly bad safety record.
reliable and safe used Volvo sedan or wagon
Does it still make you feel safe now?

Volvos are not cheap to buy or to maintain.
The best, most reliable models are the 240 (1973-1993), 740 (1984-1992), and the 940 (1990-1998). The problem is those are too old now for most people though I do still see some diehards driving them.
What Chuck said
The last time they made reliable ones were in the 90s so unless you're fine with driving around a 20 plus year old car I wouldn't recommend it
I personally have always wanted to get a mid-90s Volvo they were built like tanks and you could drive them through brick walls
Basically any Volvo product that's fully swedish without a turbocharged engine. I'd say get the V70, XC70, or the S80 with the 3.2L I6 engine in it. Those are most likely the most dependable ones from my point of view. Anything other engine is pretty much turbocharged and if used liberally, the engine could wear out like crazy so my advice is keep away from any Volvo engine except for any product that has the 3.2L I6 engine.
