I bought a 2008 toyota tacoma sr5 double cab it has 41000 miles. I was getting off highway exit when braking the truck would not stop. I had the brake to the floor it just keep accelerating. It finally throttle back to normal. Was thinking I had did something wrong with the cruise control. Then it happen again I was braking to park same thing happen again and hit a car. I checked to see if the floor mat was an issue found no evidence of this either time. Can this be fixed? What would you do? Bought this from private dealer in New Hampshire. I'm bringing it to a toyota dealership to checkout.

Definitely take it to the dealer asap. If it happens again while you are driving put the car in neutral and apply the brakes. Depending of how much it accelerates on its own it could overpower the brakes. In neutral it will just rev up the engine and not go anywhere.

"Sudden acceleration" is often a matter of catching the gas pedal with edge of one's shoe while braking.

If I recall correctly, the brake pedals in older cars were much higher than the gas pedals.  Making it more difficult to pivot on the heel and catch both.

But at the same time, today's electronic controls can surely hiccup and accelerate without driver input.

Hope Toyota has a bulletin on the issue and an easy fix!
