Hi Scotty,

I am considering buying a diy project truck 2004 Toyota Tundra SR5, 4WD with 350k miles for $3400, might be able to get it lower. Has some issues, needs a timing belt/water pump, brake work, exhaust leak, ball joints, and some rust holes on the bed floor.  The frame was factory recall replaced and is in excellent shape and has log of regular maintenance work, body has practically no rust otherwise.  Would like to do some light towing within about 100 miles of home.  I've done some engine work before (replaced head gaskets, unis, etc.), and I know Tundras can go a lot of miles, but is this too many miles/issues for a diyer to deal with even for a Tundra?

Thanks!

Dennis

Anything over the 200k mi mark is considered high mileage for a gas truck. The motor may go another couple 100k mi or it might not and you’ll be in an overhaul situation. You take that risk if you buy it.

My rule of thumb is- if you car has 300k-400k+ miles and you plan on getting rid of it, drive it until the wheels fall off or when the engine can't turn over.
