New Tax Proposed on Canadian Truck/SUV owners
Minister Steven Guilbeault and his Department of Environment bureaucrats just wrote a new report urging Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to impose a tax on pickup trucks.
They’re the most popular vehicles in Canada and now the feds are eyeing them for a new tax that would range from $1,000 to $4,000.
Up until now, the tax was only hitting large new SUVs such as the Nissan Armada, but the report is pushing for that tax to now hit pickup trucks, both light duty and heavy duty.
For example, the proposed tax would cost an extra $1,000 on a Ford F-150. A Ram 3500 heavy duty pickup truck would get hit with a $4,000 tax.
Do you know someone who drives a Silverado 1500 or Tacoma?
Canada is a huge country and it has nasty weather for much of the year. Millions of Canadians depend on their trucks to haul what they need for their work and their families. Millions more count on an SUV to get them through all kinds of road conditions.
Should Prime Minister Justin Trudeau get to punish you for the vehicle you drive?
Vancouver city hall tried to push through a similar sort of tax, but it was fought in public hearings and they backed down. The mayor even voted against the new vehicle tax.
Greedy politicians are always finding new ways to put their hands into other peoples' pockets. Money and power are the real motivation behind government "green" initiatives.
Vote the Bum out of office!
I've seen governors and mayors have underlings "urge" things, so then they can ride in and "rescue" the voters from the new tax or other straw man article. Let's hope this is the case. Do you have a link to a good article and/or the report? I could spread this issue through the Canadian fire fighter network.
Keep in mind that this would be on top of Carbon Taxes which we already pay. Carbon tax was already increased multiple times, and is planned to keep increasing in the future.

Mr Guilbeault:

"It has never been more critical for Canada to take bold action to reduce emissions across our economy."
Once they begin taxing something - they never stop, it only goes up.
I'm sure that soon they'll want way over $1,000 in "green" taxes on everything that's not an EV
"Green" taxes are never about actually helping the environment, It's about putting more money in the politicians pockets to allow short-sighted spending bills that evidently cause stagnation.
If they'd "care" about the environment, they would reduce taxes for reasonably green vehicles by their tail pipe emission ratings regardless of what type it is - NOT by penalizing costumers who want to buy a truck in the most popular segment, NOR by damaging and devaluing the people's property (like they chose to do in Europe).
Without getting political, as Doc said, I hope the people will realize his time in office is over. Ideally he should be kicked out like he recently was in the EU (link to youtube)
Thank you Dan and thank you Christine Anderson for saying what is on the minds of many unhappy Canadians.
To say that I am 100% against that nonsense is the understatement of the year.
I am totally against taxes to begin with, and this so called "green" movement is only about higher taxation and personal freedom being stripped away.
If the new tax takes hold in Canada, it will eventually move it's way south.

@chucktobias is hundred percent correct. All governments are constantly trying to find ways to take more money from people's pockets and the least thing they care about is the environment or green energy or anything else you could name. For example if they really cared some states wouldn't charge more on the yearly tab renewal for hybrid cars to make up for the less gasoline tax owners of those cars pay. And even if all vehicles become electric they'll find new ways to charge people more; higher electricity prices, even higher yearly tab renewal fees, charge taxes per mile, etc.
New and Used?
Once it's pushed through, it'll be easy to expand to encompass whatever they want.
yikes! I thought it was bad down here. gotta vote that one down
give them some time, the politicians up there will be just as nuts as the ones down here. for many years you had to get a safety inspection on pick ups every year. glad they did away with that one.
