[Solved] Scotty - thoughts on Ford Edge(s)?

We're moving back to one of the Midwestern states, taking over the parents house and their trailers along with it. (2 small cargo, 2 small boat trailers). Generally we try to go for a v6 with a hitch and as a rule of thumb, we stick to American cars. Problem is.. my parents were Chevy people and I hated the ones we had for falling apart at the seams. We now drive a Ford and enjoy it - but would you recommend the use of an Edge?

Is it better to buy "newer" (2014+) or save cost (and maybe not headache) to purchase an older model? Budget is probably around 15-17k but I try to budget 1-2k USD to drop into it for replacement parts and oil changes, etc after purchase..

Is the Edge reliable? Supposedly the 2014 was one of the best years but are any of them particularly "lemons" in your experience?

Whatever decent vehicles I think they're kind of odd looking myself but beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Just realized most of the ones I've seen were V6 turbos and you'd want a mechanic to check out the engine's turbos and transmissions closely before you buy

Thanks Scotty!

They have 3 trims - v6 wo/turbo, i4 w/turbo, and v6 w/twin turbo.

Obviously I'm going for the first. I want a solid engine and turbos scare me because its just one more thing to fail.

Would the Flex being comparable to this if using the same engine, or they have entirely different problems?

Not really.  That naturally aspirated v6 engine alone (with water pump internal to the engine and driven by timing chain) is a dealbreaker.  Even to replace the water pump (assuming it has not already damaged the engine - worst case) is a partial engine out operation, which will get very expensive.

There was also a class action lawsuit against Ford for this:

While I am not a big fan of Ford products, I must say the Edge impressed me when I rented one for a week. Granted it was only a week, so I have no real long term experience with the car.

My only complaint was the door jamb had a sharp piece of chrome.

While I can’t give it a personal recommendation because I only had it for a week and I have never had to maintain or repair one, if it must be an Edge, get the non-turbo.

It surprisingly reminded me of my old X5 in size and scope.
