Scotty What can cause my car to idle inconsistently. After driving it if I put it in park, it drops down to 500ish rpm and then goes to 1k rpm and then drops again and goes up again. What is the first thing to diagnose/look for to fix it? 09 corolla 1.8

Look for vacuum leaks.

I’m going to guess a throttle body position sensor.
I don’t know if it can be tested but I had the same problem in the past with a dodge. After trying all sorts of suggestions I landed on the sensor. 2 minutes and $15 later my problem was gone forever.

Could also be a bad IAC valve.
