Hello, I have a 1990 MX-5 with a stuck spark plug, the problem is that the spark plug socket slips whenever any sort of force is used to remove the plug. The nut on the spark plug is not damaged which is why I am confused as to why it does not grip. I have tried spraying both WD40, CRC 556 and a rust removal spray and left it for 24h plus all without a result. What can I do?
To anyone reading, I managed to fix the problem. The spark plug removal socket had a too thick outer edge which stopped the socket from reaching all the way down. The solution was to lathe down the head of the spark plug socket, an engine repair shop assisted me with that.
Thank you for posting the fix. Glad to hear that you worked it out yourself.
Examine your spark plug socket real close. Mine had a substantial crack that wasn't readily visible but allowed the socket to spread just enough to spin on the plug.
Try another wrench and be careful it to strip the treads for spark plug holes.
