Serious Mechanic Error Story!

Hey Scotty, I have a CRAZY story. I have a 2006 dodge ram 1500. Recently I had some major front end work done on the truck, replaced both front struts, upper control arms, both lower ball joints ect. The mechanic forgot to re-install the castle nut on the drivers side front tie rod. I drove this truck 3 times, including on the highway, until it finally popped out going 30-35 mph. The truck started shaking violently and bouncing, as the wheel went sideways. I was able to maintain control, and pulled over to a safe location. Scary experience! I love your show, I am switching to strictly TOYOTAS after owning this truck. It has been the absolute worst vehicle I have ever owned. I literally use my 5 free AAA tows every year on this truck! Thanks for the great information and content!

I know the owner of a local used car lot, he was telling me one day over lunch that he went through 5 mechanic applicants before he got one who could speak english and knew what a screwdriver was. Then after going through a bunch more interviews, he finally hired a 55 year old mechanic that had furloughed by a heavy equipment outfit due to work slowdown because of Covid. Now he says that because this guy had been working heavy equipment/farm equipment most of his life, he can fix most car problems in his sleep. Young guys fresh out of some kind of trade school (or OJT) may someday be OK, but there's no substitute for experience, common sense, and a person that checks their own work.

That's why I prefer to be present when a mechanic works on my car.

I almost had a row with a guy years ago when he didn't insert right one of the parts that holds one of hoses and is very close to the engine. When he took the part out and took a look on it, he realized his mistake. Otherwise he did good job.

Unfortunately the dealer doesn't let any presence since my newer car is under warranty.
