Hi Scotty,

My car has 118km with automatic transmission currently having issue when I'm driving it cold it shifts perfectly but after 20-30 mins driving the shifts acting weird either skipped a gear or delayed and its revving too high before going to the next gear. Should I replace the transmission or have the transmission check by mechanic first to check the shift solenoids and electronic parts or it's just a waste of money.

2003 Volvo S40 T4

Appreciate you time for this.

Thank you.

Regards,

red

Has the transmission been properly maintained over the last 20 years? It should be diagnosed by a transmission expert.

I replaced the transmission fluid last year that's it... are there anything else need to be checked in the transmission? Could you share what are those things need for preventive maintenance.. thank you

If the transmission fluid and filter had not been changed in nearly 20 years it may have been too late to do it safely. See the FAQ for details.

You have the typical symptoms for a worn out valve body.

If that’s the 5 speed automatic transmission, then it’s the typical failure point for these - especially if your car wasn’t reprogrammed to disable it going into neutral when you’re off the gas.

If you haven’t drive too much with this issue, you can probably get away with a valve body replacement (usually $300-$800) at a specialist shop.

(note: volvo valve bodies on the Aisin AW55-50SN differ from those for Renualt, Opel, etc.)

Have it repaired.

Hi Dan,

Thank you for your advised. Sorry, could you let me know what a Valve body is? Is my issue not related to transmission? Because I'm planning to replace the transmission instead of repair. My car is a 2003 Volvo S40 T4 2.0, appreciate your help on this.

Regards,

The valve body is part of the the transmission, inside of it.

Replacing instead of repairing is a good option - IF you have a warranty on the replacement unit. (And a guarantee that it will fit your car)
-
Keep your current unit too, these FWD trannies are not big at all.
-
The valve body is the hydraulic control mechanism inside of the transmission.
It’s a hydraulic plate with about 7 valves inside it called “solenoids” (also has filter meshes, plungers, etc.)

Thank you Chuck and Dan really appreciate your help.

Cheers!
