Would a shiftable automatic transmission technically last longer if it were driven only in manual mode?

no. It's just a gimmick.

No. You may use it if your automatic transmission is going out to make the most out of the transmission.

No, manually shifting an automatic transmission does not increase or decrease the longevity of it. It just gives you shifting control like a manual transmission. The only thing it will effect is gas mileage depending on when you shift and what gear you drive on.
