Scotty... is it harmful to shift my Kia Sorento, 2016, V6, 100,000 miles (third Sorento...with NO problems!) at times ...i.e. Stop Lights, etc.... into N? I winter in "flat" Florida...where the stop lights can be "forever" and I think applying the brakes during that time would be "more" harmfull...??  Thank you for you opioion.

It's not a good idea. Shifting into neutral or park prohibits you from making any sort of maneuver without first shifting into gear again. In an unexpected, emergency situation, that can mean all the difference. Really, unless you're iding for 10 minutes because there's a railroad crossing being occupied by a train, keep it in Drive. I would completely shut it off after a time. The torque converter slips when the brakes are on and it's sitting in Drive, something that it's designed to do, routinely.

When encountering unusually long or prolonged idle times I simply put my car in park.
