Hey, just got into an accident with last car that totalled it ('03 Cadillac Deville, got it at 174,000 3 years ago, finished at 187,000 miles) and I go back to school in July and need a car fairly fast. I need something cheaper to maintain and can sustain a good amount of mileage within the next few years (planning on doing a good amount of travelling). Was looking for Private Sellers on Facebook Marketplace and found a 2011 Hyundai Elantra GLS Touring Wagon with 124,000 miles on it and a manual transmission. Up for $3,600. Personally, I want an '02 Camry automatic, but this doesnt seem like a bad deal. Should I buy it?
It's on Facebook Marketplace. That alone means be careful.
I wouldn't purchase a Hyundai as their quality is terrible. But if you are going to:
1. Make sure it has a clean title
2. Make sure the title is in the name of the person selling it to you
3. 100% have a mechanic check it over before you buy. If they object, pass.
I buy and sell cars all day from all kinds of places. FaceBook Marketplace has been the worst experience I've had with people and the quality of vehicles. What isnt salvage is overpriced or been through 7 accidents or its "selling for a friend", bleh bleh. Paper plates on everything because auction car flippers are running rampant with fake profiles.
I wouldn't buy anything from there. But if you are set on it, and set on a Hyundai, definitely consider it Buyer Beware.
Yup Im going with a camry, thank you!
I'm glad to hear that. I think you will be way happier to be honest. And you're welcome! 🙂
Pass on it: you have the unholy trinity of post 2010 Hyundai, high mileage (124,000) for a Hyundai (and who knows how well it was maintained by previous owners), and Facebook Marketplace - a potential setup for disappointment.
How long do you need the car to last? That is a better year for Hyundais and the manual transmission helps. If the car checks out and depending on your needs/expectations it could be okay.
Honestly just over a year or two then giving it to my younger brother for his first car.
Make sure the oil has been changed on time on it.
