Hi Scotty,
Im 23 years old and work in a company where they used to have allot of land rover defenders as their field cars. They have 1 left and the engine has been rehauld, computerbox has been replaced and the wiring harness has also been replaced(reason why is the harness was bad and the mechanics didnt know exactly and they started replacing everything). They will reconstruct the chassi rust for me if i purchase it. Till now i have had mixed reviews about the car but i always wanted a landrover defender since i was a kid. I wanted your opinion on a 2006 landrover defender 130, it has 100k km. The car has a snorkel installed, bullbar and winchkit. it does need some interior work and exterior work. everything works, i have driven the car and it drives fine to my expectations.
In the future, you will curse the day you bought this vehicle.
Best answer.
If you have money to burn on endless breakdowns, why not?

im getting it for 4000$ which is really good i think. But what makes them so unreliable?
British Car Syndrome, going back to BMC and British Leyland days.
If you want a unreliable toy, go ahead.
no. If you actually need a reliable offroader then get a Landy
i was planning to use the car light offroading and for somt transport since its a 130 pickup. Im getting it for 4000$
Sounds like you want it yesterday. Offer $2000 and see what happens.
Junk it at the first sign of any major trouble. An engine overhaul at 100,000 kms should tell you everything you need to know about the type of vehicle you’re getting yourself into.
the other engine had almost 300k. They put another td5 engine in and that has about 100k. Its was field car(driving in mines), they get abused allot 😆 so thats why it was down eventually.
Why do you want to buy a known abused vehicle?
because i really love the look of the car and what the car has and it's been a dream car ever since i was a kid. The car has a winchkit already installed. they replaced most of the things on the car(and i can backtrack it) and no one has driven it ever since (2021). If its really that bad i wont buy it. But i want to know what makes it so bad.....I have watched countless videos and read countless forums and articles. I thought I would give here a try to get some info on the issues i can encounter with owning one. Breakdown issues. i currently drive the car around the area bcus no one drives/;starts it so the battery dies eventually from it sitting there.
Like all of us have said in this thread, if you must have it, offer peanuts. Use it as a weekend toy and you should be okay. These vehicles are notorious for the ‘never meet your idol’ syndrome. Enjoy -

It's been you dream car since you were a kid? Emotional decisions based on childhood experiences are generally disastrous.
I almost made the mistake of getting a Land Rover. I started watching some Youtube videos where an engineer (Geoffrey Crocker) was tearing down his landrover and rebuilding it almost from scratch. Since I did a bit of engineering in my teens, I thought I could handle the kind of things he was doing.
But unless you have a fully equipped workeshop, time & money to burn, and you're a trained engineer / mechanic, just forget it. All the jokes have been told about this car. And from someone who lives in the UK, trust me it's designed to be a money pit and keep putting money back into Landrover from owners. They made the chassis out of mild steel even after WW2 and they had access to more durable metal.
That sense of "If I maintain it, it wont break" or "If all the things that could go wrong have been addressed and replaced, and then I maintain it it wont break" just don't seem to apply to this make. It's just a pile of rubbish. Like almost everything the English make. They're only slightly beter than the Chinese.
I think there's a famous saying in Australia: "If you want to go offroading in the outback, you take a Landrover. But if you want to come back, you take a Land Cruiser".
Just say NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not sure why exactly you would asked this question. Like every forum members said, buy it if you are investing so much money into the car. If not, I would run away.
If you can spend more and want something reliable that will last look into getting a Land Cruiser; they're great and I'm sure you wouldn't regret buying one.
where i live, any pickup in ok condition goes for $6000-$8000 with high mileage 200-300K+(km). Currently i did decide to get it but i havent paid anything yet bcus they need to reconstrsuct the chassis. But i am driving it atleast once every week. But if its really that bad im just gonna decline....I just want to know what makes it so bad.......i have done some research and found just typical stuff that almost any car needs replacing eventually....
There are all these responses to your question telling you to avoid it so either you want to go with the advice here or make a purchase based on your own research. And we've all given you suggestions on what to get instead. So at this point it's your money and decision.
