Should I buy a Scion Tc Sport 2008 2.4?

Hi Scotty,

I love your work! Thanks for all you do!

I am looking at a 2008 Scion Tc with the  2.4 engine that you warn about from a Toyota Dealer. It has 200k miles and is in pretty decent shape. The manager for the dealer and used car department both claim they have never heard of the problem with the 2.4 in 2008. They said they did their complete inspection and haven’t found a problem. The car is a little loud but seems to run ok. There doesn’t seem to be any wet oil in the exhaust pipe but it there is enough soot to make me wonder.  Any advice? They dropped the price from $10k to 4K

Thank you so much!

  • I doubt anybody else here will tell you this but it may not be such a bad idea have your independent mechanic look at it first but even if it does burn oil it's not necessarily the end of the world

These people shouldn't be operating a car dealership in the first place.

I wouldn't buy it even if the price went down by 80%.

Please look at something else.

They're lying to you. Run away.

I'm a fan of the first-gen tC.  I always thought it looked nice for its class.

Unfortunately at 200K, that one is nearing end of life.  And if it is burning oil, the fix could be more than it's worth.  I think they should keep going down, maybe $3500 or even $3K.  But no price is worth it if it does not pass an independent inspection.

If an independent guy says its OK, and you can get a few hundred more off the price, could be an OK option.
