  1.  I am looking to buy my first vehicle and I am getting different opinions on whether to buy sedan or SUV in Calgary, Canada. I am having small family and mostly I will be using vehicle for daily commute or short road trips.
  2. I am getting different opinions due to Calgary weather, people are suggesting to go with SUV instead of sedan as it's snows in winter. I am still tilted towards sedan as it mostly suits my needs. It will be great if someone help me out.

Scotty always says that snow tires with front wheel drive are better than all wheel drive with all season tires

That being said depending on how large your family is you may have a hard time fitting into a smaller sedan you may want to get a Camry or even an Avalon

A hatchback may work well for you like an all-wheel drive matrix

If you do want an SUV I would go with the RAV4

Scotty also recommends Subarus for snowy areas

You get the best bang for your buck if you buy Sedan. With that said, I would consider a Camry or Accord. If you really need AWD, you can consider AWD Camry or Avalon.

Everyone and their dog are getting SUV. But I like Sedans. It really depends on what your needs are.

Sounds like you are squarely in the center of the crossover market. Crossovers are, by definition, wagon or SUV-shaped vehicles built on a unibody car chassis.  Usually tall with good visibility, family space, and ground clearance, but comfortable car-like ride.  AWD is available on most of them and will obviously be useful in Alberta.

The Rav4 is now Toyota's best selling vehicle, and that's why.  It's a good compromise between a sedan and SUV.  I'd start there and work your way out (Subaru, CRV, etc).
