Should I buy Toyota Matrix with engine replacement?

I wanted to see if anyone had any advice on whether or not I should buy a 2003 Toyota Matrix XR I’ve been looking at. It has about 160,000 miles on it, but the owner said the engine has been replaced about 2 years ago and that engine they used had around 40k miles from a salvage. He had no other info on who replaced it or anything.

The check engine light is on, but nothing else.

The engine sounded really clean and the only real concern I had was the steering wheel leaned left by a good bit, but my father said that may just be an alignment adjustment issue. Other than being sluggish to accelerate I didn’t notice any warning sounds or smells. The car itself didn’t show any major signs of damage except for normal wear and tear and the body work wasn’t great.

He’s wanting $3,200. What do you guys think? Thanks for the help everyone.

Okay, awesome. I’ll try and talk him down. Should I look for anything else?

Thanks for answering Scotty. The process is really stressful so your help is incredibly appreciated. Hope you’re doing well!
