I have a 2004 Silverado 1500 with 164,000 miles.... Same question
I believe I heard Scotty say to change the filter and reuse the fluid but I need to be certain

Clarification: When was the last time the fluid was changed? Also, what color is the fluid currently? Does it smell burnt?  Any metallic particles in there? Does it shift fine?

For high mileage American vehicles, Scotty doesn’t recommend changing the fluid.

Japanese vehicles, on the other hand, don’t suffer as bad from shedding clutch material. As a result, Scotty recommends changing the fluid in them.

Either way, it’s a good idea to read through this link for further guidance -

If it's never slipped before, yes go ahead and replace it. Keep the old stuff just in case.
