Should I change my ATF

Exactly as the question says. I recently inherited an old 1999 Honda Accord from a family member and the car has some transmission issues. It slips and shifts hard and the car has even stopped while driving and I had to pull over on the side of the road. Replacing a transmission would cost me a fortune, but I've heard that changing the transmission fluid could cause even more damage. I know that completely flushing out the system is a no-go, so should I drain some of the fluid and top it off? What's the best course of action? Thanks.

Those cars have weak transmissions.

As @justin-shepherd says, see the site FAQ for details. (We've been asked about transmission fluid changes probably thousands of times so it's covered there.) However your best course of action would be to just get rid of the car. It's 25 years old, a model known for transmission problems, and the trans is already shot. It's not worth putting money into.

See the FAQ, https://carkiller.com/scottykilmer/howto/atf/ . There's a complete guide there. We get asked this question at least once a day sometimes.
