Should I change the automatic transmission fluid on this toyota scion xa 2005? It has 246k miles, runs smoothly, shifts great but the fluid is dark/black. I assume it hasn't been changed since the original owner had it (I just bought it myself). I was planning on just dropping the pan, changing the filter and just adding new fluid on it.
side note: can I use Valvoline MaxLife Multi-Vehicle ATF Full Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid on it? Thanks

If the fluid is black, with those miles the trans is likely on its last leg, and changing the fluid at this point won't do much for it. If you change it, make sure you follow Toyota procedures to a 'T' if you don't want to fail completely.
