Should I get a Jeep Cherokee XJ?

I currently own a 2004 ford explorer and it is not really cut out for offroading, however, it is nice for long road trips since my friend and I can sleep in it should we need to due to its size. I'm thinking about buying a stock Jeep Cherokee XJ and putting a 6-inch lift on it and the rest of the offroad mods. Would this be a car that is reliable to daily drive and take on long trips across the country?

You'll find good info on a Jeep specialty site. Here's a good one that specializes in the XJ:

The XJ does not suffer from the severe quality problems of recent models, in fact they can easily run for hundreds of thousands of miles. However they are all at least 20 years old (most are older) so you'll be dealing with age-related issues. On the plus side they are very capable off-road and there is lots of support put there for upgrades and modifications.
