Hey, Scotty! I purchased a car in October of 2020 a Kia spectra for $1500. I just got a oil change and was told my transmission is going out! Is it worth getting a new transmission? As well it's not even showing a check engine sign warning.

please provide the vehicle year, mileage, and symptoms. Thanks.

My bad it's a 2002 Kia spectra automatic 78k on it as well got it scanned today and was told it had code P0340

On a Kia? Nah. Time to look for a new car. Try to find something in a Toyota or Honda flavor.

Thanks! And just had it scanned code P0340

Is the transmission shifting fine?  What made them conclude the transmission is going out?

in any event, the Kia Spectra was discontinued after 2009, technically replaced by the Kia Forte.  If what they are saying is indeed true, then the cost of a replacement transmission (plus labor) will easily exceed what you paid for the vehicle.  In that case, I would look for a different vehicle if I were you.  We have a good car buying guide sticky under FAQ to help members.

If it is shifting fine, keep driving it, but also be looking for another vehicle just to be ready.

You got an oil change and someone told you the (automatic?) transmission was going out. You were having transmission trouble and didn't notice any issues prior to being told? Really?  1) What you were told sounds very fishy. 2) At $1500, the KIA really has little resale value and a transmission replacement of any kind is a load more money than the car is worth.

If your transmission was on its way out, you'd know it every time you drove it. (Slip, clang, bang, shudder... something)

Drive it until the wheels fall off and take the couple hundred bucks when you junk it.

For sure! And yes what I meant to say upon the oil change done the mechanic told me it's going thus was just last saturday. But just had it scanned. Good news! No transmission issues just a code for P0340

I would get rid of it. Those engines and transmissions are notoriously bad.

Do not buy any KIA or Hyundai before 2012. All those are just bad in quality. IF getting one, buy any model after 2011 on Hyundai except Sonata from 2016 to 2020 because they had notorious problems on the engine.

We got an accent 2012 model in 2011. It runs pretty good and we have it for the last 10 years now with 1,00,000 miles. Dad doesn't drive as much though.

I know the whole car might not last as long as a Toyota or Honda like 2,00,000 miles or so, but we are sure taking care of it!

Depends. Could you get a 200 dollar junkyard transmission like another member did ? You might try your luck. I wouldn't put any real money into it because its basically worthless.

I hope you don't mind for bringing this up, but Demuro wrecked the Spectra:

According to Edmunds, you cars starting value is $209
