So my exhaust heat shield started dragging while I was driving, something knocked it loose. I took it off and put it in my trunk, I still have it. I don't know how to get it back or if I even need it. The fires are rare aren't they? It is also very dry rotted and messed up, I think that is why it fell off considering I have a 1997 Toyota Camry LE.

yes you should. I've seen melted fuel tanks, scorched wires, etc from missing heat shields. pop rivets work really well.

The heat shield was put there for a reason. If you don't replace it you can wind up with burned-up wiring.
