Hello Scotty,
What do you think about having my 2016 Silverado 5.3 with the 6L80 retuned by hptuner to stage 1 to avoid the lifters problems and the transmission problems?
Thanks for your advice!
If you plan to keep the truck for a long time and want longevity out of the engine, then it’s worth considering deleting the AFM system (which is GM’s cylinder deactivation). Any by delete I mean literally remove the AFM hardware inside the engine and replace with non-AFM. It will also require a tune of the ECU. Anyways, this is a smart route. You didn’t mention any of this but a Stage 1 tune would presumably delete AFM.
.
Well known shop owner and Master Mechanic the Car Wizard recently talked about GM’s AFM system and said doing a full hardware delete would be in the ballpark of $3,000 to $6,000 dollars. It’s definitely costly but it’s the only way to eliminate the shortcomings of the AFM.
.
However, make sure whoever is doing the work is a quality shop and has done tons of AFM deletes before. If you plan to spend that kind of money you want it done right.
.
Also, any power bump can reduce longevity of engine/transmission so I would personally leave the power alone.
a tune costs a lot of money and doesn't fix the problem. The lifters will still fail.
