I have a 2007 Camry with a sludgy engine. It is working fine and doesn't burn or leak oil, but a car mechanic told me that it will need a rebuild soon if you leave it like that. So, what do I do? Do I use synthetic oil and change it frequently?

If you clean out sludge now, you may start burning oil, especially if you use synthetic oil. I would keep it conventional, personally, and start changing oil every 2,000 miles until all of the sludge is gone. Motor oil has different detergents in them. Scotty likes Castrol, I like Pennzoil, bit any quality oil is fine. It appears either you or somebody before you never changed the oil. As long as you change the oil every 5,000 miles, you shouldn't have issues with sludge.
Cars from the 1950s and before had issues with oil sludge. They had no oil filter and owners of cars had to change oil every 3,000 miles or you would develop engine sludge.
try some cleaner and hope for the best
