Catalytic converters are designed for the lifetime of the ca welded on. You need to do a proper analysis and determine why the catalytic converter is inefficient. It could be exhaust manifold leaks, oxygen sensors that have gone bad, vacuum leaks... Did you change the oil every 5,000 miles? Modern cars are all computerized, so if something is wrong with the exhaust system, the computer may trip that code, even though the converter itself is fine. Don't gamble with $1500+ just to have the car come back, tripping the same code.

My catalytic converters are welded on in my 1999 Ford Ranger, and I've never replaced them. They're the faxtory original components. It has almost 292k miles on it.

I have codes p0430 & p0420 the car lost power n is slower now

Those are generic codes and can be caused by almost anything. I scan tool that has live data will help you with is.

How do you know you need a replacement catalytic converter? If you're getting a code related to the catalyst that can have many different causes other than the converter itself.

You need to do more diagnostics to determine the cause before replacing expensive parts.

Depending on the state you live in you may or may not be able to do it.

Magnaflow seems to have direct fit (more or less bolt on) cats.

But you have to live in a state where it is allowed. Magnaflow can only legally sell to certain states. And each state has different guidelines. There needs to be some sort of special stamp on the cat in some states.

(Not that I recommend it, but I have a friend that lived in California and got his cat sent to an another friends place in Nevada. So far so good on their cat).
