Hey Scotty, my brother has a ford focus hatchback 2009. 2l engine 268 hp diesel, manual, 286000km.  And we ran into some problems. It sometimes just doesnt start, but when it does start it works perfectly fine. Its becoming a more common problem with this car and Im wondering whats the problem.

Already load tested your battery & checked the fuel pressure? Does it crank but not start or no crank at all?

Yeah the battery is fine, the fuel pressure is fine as well. It cranks but not starts.

Might want to try the glow plugs.

Yeah apart from the glow plugs, perform a compression test on the engine. 286,000 kms is relatively low mileage for a diesel but we don’t know the service history & the driving style of the owner.

See under FAQ sticky:

We don’t have a section for diesels, yet.

Diesel ignites under pressure. Perhaps the engine somehow does not produce enough of it.

Does it do always or only when cold outside? In this case glow plugs can be bad too.

It does it always.

If everything works fine, the compression is bad. Can you perform compression test?

I didnt tryed that yet, thanks for mentioning. I'll see how it goes.
