Spongy Brake Pedal

So I have a 2004 Ford Ranger with 85k miles and the brake pedal feels spongy. When I go to hit the brakes there is about 3-4 inches of play in the pedal before the brakes engage. When they do engage they pretty much slam even though I don't push the pedal that hard. I got the truck with 83k miles and haven't messed with or changed the brakes. (Brake/ABS light is NOT on)

Sounds like the master cylinder might be going bad, or somehow you have gotten air in the lines. How long has it been since you put new pads on? I’ve seen brake pads worn down to the point calipers are over extended and the driver never noticed it. How are your pads?

I got the truck with 83k miles and it now has 85k. The pads were fine last time I checked (which was when I bought it) but going to check again this weekend. Also it has disc in the front and drum in the back if that makes a difference with my problem.

See if your emergency brake will hold the vehicle when you put it in gear. That should let you know how your rear pads are doing.
