On my 1985 F250 diesel with a C6 the starter will grind sounding like in spins fast but doesn't engage the flex plate. Maybe every 10 starts. I have cleaned all the connections and ground and have good batteries and 12.5V at the starter. I understand the click no start but the grind sounds the same as when you try to start a car already running. I thought the solenoid keeps the starter from turning until the bendix is fully engaged?

The Bendix drive or the flexplate may have a worn-out spot.
