So my parking brake needs to be adjusted, it barely keeps my vehicle from rolling. Until I can save up the money to pay someone to adjust it,
realistically, for how long can I put it in first or reverse before one or both of the gears becomes damaged
2012 wrangler standard tranny

Did you get a estimate? I can't imagine it'll cost much more than a tank or two of gas.

you won't damage the gears, but one day it'll pop out when you least want it to. Adjusting the parking brake is really easy. Just jack it up and do it yourself. It's a safety issue and probably required by law for it to work.
