Mercedes parking brake disengage

Hi Mr. Kilmer.

First off, I want to thank you for educating us through your youtube channel.

Secondly, I apologize for owning an old Mercedes. It was bought by my dad brand new in 2012.

Finally, Let's get into the problem now.

Model : Mercedes GLK 300 4matic
Year: 2012

In the recent storm, a bit of water has entered the rear floor space of the car as well as the exhaust.
The insurance company has recommended that I don't start the vehicle's engine before they inspect it.

I am allowed to switch on the battery for the purpose of lowering windows or to engage the gear ( neutral/ parking). I am referring to the accessory mode while turning the key.

When the recovery tow truck arrived, I put the car on neutral and disengaged the parking brakes's hand lever. I saw the parking brakes foot lever disengage as well.

Now the problem is,
The dash tells me that the parking brake is still on. The car isn't movable either.

(I don't exactly remember how my car functions normally. Whether the parking brake disengages only when the engine is on or not)

This poses a challenge for the recovery tow truck to move the car since it seems that the parking brake is engaged. The vehicle is not moving when pushed by force.

Is there a way to disengage the parking brake without starting the engine?

If not, how is recovery done for such cases?

Also if I do attempt to start the engine, will there be some way for the technicians to scan and find out that there was an ignition attempt after the insurance claim?

tell them to send a tow truck that lifts all four wheels . If they can tow away illegally parked vehicles with the brakes set, then can pick up yours.

Assuming the parking brake is cable-operated you could try disconnecting the cables at the calipers and see if that releases the brake.
