[Solved] fuel gauge inop

Hello! so I bought a 50 year old Mercedes 230E (w123) for dirt cheap, after it was sitting for about 5 or 6 years. It has a four-speed manual and the first thing I did was change the battery, spark plugs and rubber belt. However I have 2 issue that need fixing: the first one being the fuel indicator doesn't work, if I fill up my tank to max, it works, but the moment I go below half a tank, it just goes to zero and the "refill fuel" light comes on.

The second issue is with the gas pedal: when I step on the gas, I need to step halfway until the engine starts to take fuel and starts revving up. Being a manual, that issue makes it virtually undrivable... Especially where I live with lots of inclines and downhills.

I should mention the engine works fine, however it's not the original one. At some point, the guy I bought it from (who happens to be the original owner) swapped the original 2.3 liter carburetor engine for a straight 4 injection engine, also a 2.3 liter from a Mercedes w202.

  • Well you'd need a new sending unit in the gas tank that's broken. It moves up and down and when it gets to a certain level it shorts out because the sending unit is bad. Now is for it not accelerating. It's sad all those years. I can guarantee you the fuel injection system is in one gigantic state of being clogged up inside. Gasoline turns to a sludge over years. You'd probably have to flush the whole system out. Change the fuel filter. Maybe have to take the gas tank off and have the sludge taken out and probably will need a fuel pump too and then probably the injectors aren't clogged up too. Good luck on that one!

Had the injectors checked, they're good. I'll find a new sending unit and I'll check the fuel filter and tank. I'll make another post if I need any additional help. Thanks a bunch scotty!
