Starting issue

Hey guys I got a weird one for y’all, so I have a 2011 Ford crown Vic and it’s having a starting issue, when I go to start my car up it’ll make this grinding noise so I take the key out and try to start it up it’ll start right up so this grinding no start issue happens here an there and doesn’t matter if the car is hot or cold, so I tried replacing the starter just because it was old and probably on its way out anyways but the grinding is still happening, I’m worried it might be my flex plate, any ideas before I assume it is the flex plate?

if you remove the starter, you should be able to see the teeth on your flywheel. Turn your crankshaft with a wrench so you can inspect all the teeth.

Ok will do, also do you know any other symptoms of a bad flywheel? I just want to be sure of this before I drop my transmission tomorrow

Thanks man I didn’t know I could see the teeth of the flex plate if I took the starter off but it’s warped not sure how but I appreciate the info

My 2001 Toyota Highlander has  been grinding on start up since before I got it from the single owner. I've changed the starter, and batteries, was told to change the flywheel ring gear, which is missing teeth, when that didn't fix it. However, I did not do this, because there were signs of delay in other electrical components starting up. To solve it, as no one but me wanted to check all the electrical connections, and I didn't know where or how to start, so I turn the key on ACC and count to 30. Once everything has powered up, it seems the car has enough power to engage without grinding. The drawback is, sometimes I hurry it, and it still grinds, and also I am afraid to use my remote start, and I live in a cold climate in central Canada.

@meandsilver You're responding to a post from over 3 years ago whose author has not been active here since that time. Instead of "hijacking" someone else's topic old please post your own, giving vehicle details and a clear and concise description of the problem and what diagnostic steps have been taken so far. Thank you.
